Interview Update

Now that our Fall class of 2010 is officially in-house on campus, our recruiting cycle for the 2009 season has officially wrapped-up!  After each admissions cycle, we like to make it a habit to re-visit our application and admissions review process to see what’s working well and what we could be doing better, to make sure that we’re processing applications as efficiently and effectively as possible.

In recent years, Ivey has had a two-tier interview structure that involves both the Admissions Team and the Career Management team. Involving the Career Management team in our interview process is a very important piece of our admissions structure, and is something that sets us apart from many other schools. Our Corporate Relations Managers are the most in-tune with what our recruiters are looking for in students post-MBA, and do a great job of helping to evaluate our candidates and ensure that their career goals and expectations are clear and realistic.

To streamline our interview process while still ensuring we have sufficient input from key players in the admissions process, we have decided to move to a one-interview only structure. This one interview may be conducted by any of the following: a Corporate Relations Manager from the Career Management Team, a member of the Admissions Team, an Ivey alumnus, or an Ivey faculty member. Interviewers will be assigned based solely on scheduling and availability, so don’t be worried about who you get – there is no ‘hierarchy’ attached to our interviewers. All of our interviewers follow the same interview structure, questions, and are screening for the same criteria. In the rare case where an interviewer feels that another meeting is warranted, a candidate may be invited for a second interview.

One thing that will not change with the move to a one-interview structure, is the process in which admissions decisions and offers are made. ALL offers and decisions will still be made with the input of a full Admissions Committee which includes members of the Admissions Team, Career Management team and faculty. Post-interview, all files will be reviewed by each member of the committee, and offer decisions will be made as a group during regular committee meetings.

Ivey is fully committed to making sure that we admit the best and brightest candidates – these are the people who you’ll be with every day, and who will become your teachers, colleagues and friends. We pride ourselves on providing a thoughtful, fair and effective interview process, which has successfully produced some of the strongest leaders in today’s business world. We look forward to meeting you in an interview during our upcoming recruiting cycle!

I believe that the most important part of this process has to be (as you pointed out) the input from key players in the admissions process. Great post!
