Planning Your “Critical Path” to the MBA
I have been thinking a lot about the ‘process’ involved in evaluating the MBA investment, and wanted to reflect on a unique and specific piece of this process – timing and planning. Once candidates decide they want to pursue the MBA, they wanted to start – yesterday! There is a great deal of excitement that can quickly turn into urgency, and I would encourage you to do your best to channel this energy and enthusiasm into devoting time to plan through your MBA steps, ultimately committing to enough time to put your ‘best foot forward’ when it comes to completing all of the application requirements.
One way to do this, is to literally develop your plan, or forecast, of activities required to meet all admissions components, as well as identifying your desired Program start date. For potential applicants thinking about Ivey next year – our Program begins on April 4th, so build your ‘critical path’ by starting with this end goal in mind, and planning back all of the necessary steps to get you to April 4th. You will undoubtedly be surprised by how time-consuming the MBA application process can be! Devote a significant amount of time to GMAT preparation (typically at least 100 hours), allow yourself the time to develop thoughtful MBA essays, and ensure you have built relationships and briefed the individuals you approach for references. April might seem far away at the moment, but when you begin the process – it will be right around the corner! Be thoughful, and practical, and do your best to plan your MBA start, just like you might plan an important project, event, or work initiative. This approach will pay off!
